Some things in life just go really well together. Peanut Butter and Jelly, and Chocolate Chip and Mints are just some of the prime examples, but now you can add Robot Chicken and Star Wars into the mix as well. When the popular stop-motion series Robot Chicken decided to parody the mega popular Star Wars franchise the first time around, the reviews for the show was overwhelmingly positive. Even George Lucas approved so you can only imagine that it wouldn’t be long until the sequel Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II showed up.
Nothing has changed much since the first special. The folks at Robot Chicken, led by bite-sized star Seth Green, are still offering up their hilarious and often times, insane, fanboy interpretations of key moments in the Star Wars franchise. Ever wonder what happens to Boba Fett moments after he meets his fate in Return of the Jedi or what was going through the mind of Luke during his key battle with Darth Vader? All those questions are answered and even some random ‘what if’ scenarios are touched on in this funny special.
I was actually very amused by the whole special. I am not a huge Star Wars fan by any stretch of the imagination nor am I a big fan of Seth Green, per se. I have passing knowledge of both and tolerate them to a certain degree but even I really had a blast watching the special. You can tell that the writers really do have a soft spot for the franchise. Any and all jabs at Star Wars were friendly ones and never made with malice.
The whole Robot Chicken writing staff really deserves a lot of credit for the skits. They are really funny and the humor is pretty smart at times as well. The writers never go for the easy joke and just when I think I know the punch line, the skit goes in a completely different direction that is funnier than I would have imagined. I especially liked the skit which throws out the idea of a Storm Trooper taking his daughter to work with him. It works on so many absurd levels, not to mention the Storm Trooper is voiced by Donald Faison (Scrubs), a very funny actor in his own right. All around, the voice work is pretty top notch as well, including some Star Wars favorites like Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher, both reprising the roles that made them famous. Everyone sounds like they are having a great time doing this work and it shows in the final product.
A special hand needs to also be given to the stop-motion folks who created these incredible skits. I am not sure how many people know this but stop-motion pictures are incredibly hard to do. Not only do these people make small models and sets but also the characters you see on the screen are moved by a group of individuals, shot by shot. This means someone has to move all the characters by hand and capture each movement with a camera. That is a lot of hard work and it looks gorgeous.
Not only do fans of Robot Chicken get the original broadcast special on the DVD but they also get the uncut edition with over 10 minutes of additional skits not seen anywhere. Other DVD features include the making of featurettes, a short about the special being show at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch, as well as many of the previews that were shown on Cartoon Network to hype the special. My personal favorite is the “deleted scenes” section. It is not what you expect and just highlights the writing staff’s humor.
Overall, I really enjoyed Robot Chicken Star Wars Episode II. The writing and voice work is top notch and funny. If you are a fan of either the show or Star Wars in general, there is no reason why you would not enjoy this DVD. If you are a fan of both, I defy you to resist the urge to buy this DVD.

A deal inked with Time Warner will finally bring Robot Chicken clips to YouTube!
Which might be more worthy of that exclamation mark if this hadn’t been true for years. In fact, odds are a considerable portion of the show’s fan base got their first taste of metallic poultry on the popular video site. (This may or may not be true for this particular reporter).
What’s new as of an announcement today is that U.S. viewers can now watch the content legitimately, along with other clips from Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, CNN and Warner Bros. (and yes, that includes Gossip Girl).
For YouTube, that means they can now place commercials before, during or adjacent to the content. For users, that means they will now see commercials before, during or adjacent to the content — and that the clips may be shorter.
Specifically:
You’ll see a variety of ad formats (like overlays or in-stream ads) on their content, depending on the kind of video you’re watching, and both Turner and Warner Bros. will be able to leverage the strength of their sales forces to sell their own ads on the site.
The company will also integrate the Time Warner player into YouTube.
It’s the latest in a series of YouTube partnerships with professional media companies (as opposed to the user generated stuff that first brought the site to prominence and still accounts for the overwhelming share of the content). An earlier Time Warner deal added clips from CNN International and HBO.

This show started off with a funny teaser ad which promised the following episode would be the latest installment of the famed Robot Chicken: Star Wars specials. Of course, it wasn’t true, they admitted, because Adult Swim would’ve promoted the hell out of it for the last two weeks if it were. Instead, we got “President Hu Forbids It“, an okay episode that went easy on the blood and guts, but also went easy on nuanced jokes. The first sketch out of the box featured a nude Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz calling herself an idiot after stepping into the shower and melting. Not their finest piece of work, but as usual, there were also some strong bits to keep things balanced.
The show got going with three solid comic book movie sketches. The first of two about The Dark Knight made fun of the succession of vehicles the Batmobile could transform into after it was damaged. From motorcycle to unicycle on down to pogo stick and finally a rolling bar, Batman eventually caught up to the Joker before falling on his ass. “You can’t be serious,” a resigned Clown Prince of Crime lamented. The second one focused on the puzzled passengers aboard the two bomb-strapped ferry boats, particularly because of the Joker’s confusing explanation of the rules. Again, the crime lord couldn’t catch a break.
Those two sketches bookended a crude but still funny bit about Dr. Manhattan of Watchmen fame foiling a bank heist. The hostages’ enthusiasm was tempered only because they got to see way more of the good doctor than they asked for, and if you saw the movie, you probably did too.

The weakest portion of the episode were the two long sketches, which is strange. Normally, those pieces are the cornerstones of each episode and what make the show so great. Unfortunately, these two were fair at best. The first one told of how the World Wildlife Fund burned through all its money. The examples were pretty tame, (i.e. wild animals throwing money at strippers, bidding on expensive paintings and crashing a space shuttle bound for the Moon.) and I would’ve preferred cleverer examples of ways to waste money. “Making it rain” seems like the first joke you’d think of.
The second long sketch concerned the ubiquitous Robot Chicken “Nerd” character. This time out, he realized his true calling as a Dungeon Master and led his friends on a violent game of D&D. I liked the character the first few times he was introduced, but in his appearances the past few weeks, there hasn’t been much development. I get it. Nerds play D&D. He’s a stereotypical nerd being nerdy. Where’s the joke?
This was a fair episode of Robot Chicken, but certainly one which I felt could’ve been much stronger had some of the jokes been less obvious and a bit smarter. That’s my biggest frustration with this show – the references are all spot-on and the situations they choose to poke fun at are all worthy. It’s just sometimes the jokes they decide to use are the easiest, most basic forms of comedy and they wind up undercutting the true potential of the show.
The show focuses on mocking pop culture, referencing toys, films, television, and popular fads. One particular motif often involves the idea of fantastical characters being placed in a more realistic world or situation (such as Stretch Armstrong requiring a corn syrup transplant after losing his abilities due to aging, Optimus Prime performing a prostate cancer PSA, and Godzilla having problems in the bedroom). The program even had a 30 minute episode dedicated to Star Wars which premiered June 17, 2007 in the US featuring the voices of Star Wars notables George Lucas, Mark Hamill (from a previous episode), Billy Dee Williams, Hulk Hogan, and Ahmed Best. (The Star Wars episode was nominated for a 2008 Emmy Award: Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour).) Another recurring segment is “Hilarious Bloopers”, a parody of the Bob Saget era of America’s Funniest Home Videos featuring the host constantly moving around in various exaggerated, disjointed motions. Unlike that show, this skit ends with the host using various household methods of suicide.
The show’s theme song was composed and performed by Les Claypool of Primus, and he sings the song’s only lyrics, “It’s alive!”, in typical Frankenstein fashion. The ending theme of the show is not actually Muzak but from a cut from a Capitol Hi-’Q’ production music album entitled “The Gonk” (famously used in George A. Romero’s 1978 horror film Dawn of the Dead) clucked by a chorus of chickens, which are actually the crew members.

The bad news is there’s one new episode of Robot Chicken left this season. The good news is that before the new season starts, we’ll get to see another Star Wars special from the guys who knocked the first one out of the park. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. First we have to deal with, “President Evil” – one of the many Robot Chicken episode titles that sounds like a potential sketch. Unfortunately, it wasn’t included and this penultimate episode of Season 3 continued along the same path as last week. By which we mean, it was okay, but not great.
The episode began with a quick but funny scene involving Albert Einstein and his wife in couple’s therapy, essentially giving a classic joke the stop-motion animation treatment. Tough-talking Albert Einstein is one of the funnier characters Robot Chicken has added to its repertoire and we hope to see more of him in the future. Following that, however, there weren’t too many highlights, especially where pop culture parodies are concerned. The Ocean’s Eleven sketch was predictable and bland and the Tiger Woods sketch didn’t conquer any new territory either. Robot Chicken has nailed some videogame parodies in the past, (Mario Kart in GTA: Vice City comes to mind), and by contrast, this episode’s Dig Dug sketch was not their greatest effort.

The pop culture mash-ups usually get the attention, however, once in a while, an episode will have some strong bits that don’t parody a movie, videogame or TV show. This was one of those times. By law, Robot Chicken must include at least one (1) sketch involving a child in peril and they met their quota with an amusing sketch about a father tormenting his daughter’s stuffed animals. After that, an extended scene treated schoolyard “cooties” as if it were a natural disaster, with the government being called in to clean up the mess. Not surprisingly, this scene had plenty of over-the-top violence and mayhem we expect to see.
The final sketch of the episode was the strongest, although admittedly in a weak field. It was set in a movie theater, where a group of teens were waiting through the previews in order to get to the feature presentation, (the Robot Chicken credits.) Fortunately, fake movie trailers are what Robot Chicken does well, because they’ve had three seasons’ worth of experience. Everyone knows that “triumph over adversary” movies with singing and dancing all have the same plot, and Robot Chicken did a good job condensing that entire genre into one film called, “Young Black People on a Rhythm Team.” It’s the story of a renegade stepper who must learn to…oh you know how it ends.
The most effective fake trailer was also the simplest: Michael Bay’s “Explosions.” When you walk into a Michael Bay film, you know exactly what to expect, and Robot Chicken pointed that out very clearly. In fact, there were so many explosions, the voiceover announcer couldn’t even read the title of the film before getting cut off by another fiery explosion, or twelve.
All in all, this wasn’t the finest fifteen minutes of Robot Chicken, but hopefully next week’s season finale will end with a bang. Or a bang and a superhero caught in a compromising position. Or a bang involved in a bloody triple-murder.
